little league approvedAn Interactive CD that Teaches How to Play Smart in the Field

"Where's The Play?" is an information-packed interactive CD that teaches the all-important baseball and softball basics that young players need to learn... and visualize...again and again. See plays unfold, learn the right way to react, and with constant interactive feedback, correct mistakes. And, it's a great coaching tool, too! Whether they play youth baseball or softball, boys and girls ages 6 to 12 can learn from the situational training found in "Where's The Play?". An approved product of Little League Baseball, "Where's The Play?" focuses on defense and strategy, helping players avoid common mental mistakes.

"Where's The Play?" is unique. It's not a lecture like a videotape. It's interactive. Kids use their computers, where they love to learn, to click and discover baseball and softball principles on their own. It helps them see plays unfold and learn the right way to react. Then they apply that knowledge to play baseball more proficiently and gain a better appreciation of the game.

Coaches know that each time the ball is hit, every player on the field has a job! Obviously, at least one player will try to field the ball. But, every other player should also be moving: to cover a base, backup the hit or a throw or play cutoff. These are the defensive fundamentals every coach expects his team to know. And that’s what "Where’s The Play?" teaches: How to play smart in the field. What makes a great baseball or softball player? A combination of skill and smarts. Have you ever seen a young player field the ball, and then not know what to do? It’s not a skill problem. It’s a head problem. And "Where’s The Play?" can help, because it teaches baseball smarts. It is an invaluable aid in building confidence and competence in young players.

Players: Learn their job on the field and know what to do when the ball is hit. They relax, have fun and make more plays.

Coaches: Reinforces what you teach. Never contradicts! Builds mental agility; reduces mistakes. Your entire team plays smart in the field! Great for working with teams on rainy days or when field time is limited.

Parents: Kids have more fun because Where's The Play? teaches kids how to succeed in the field. It builds confidence and competence in young players.

The CD-Rom runs on boths Macs and PCs. It is narrated by a 12-year old Little Leaguer named Drew, and it is broken down into 6 innings:

1st inning - Where's The Out? starts with an explanation of what's a forced out. It continues by showing every possible combination of base runners and asks where to throw to get a forced out. When kids click on a base where they think there's a forced out, they hear an umpire yell, "Out" if the answer is correct and, "Safe" if the answer is incorrect. There's also a visual indication of right or wrong. At any time, they can click on the Explain button to find out why. All explanations are in Drew's voice and are accompanied by text.

2nd inning - Where's The Best Out? extends the ideas taught in Inning 1 by explaining the idea of getting the lead runner out. It shows every possible base running situation and asks where to throw to get the best out. As in all innings, where there's a choice in a given play, players are directed to ask their coaches about how they'd do it. When kids click on a base that they think is the best forced out, they hear an umpire yell, "Out" if the answer is correct and, "Safe" if the answer is incorrect. At any time they can click on the Explain button to find out why. All explanations are in Drew's voice and are accompanied by text.

3rd inning - Covering the Bases teaches which player is responsible for covering each base. For example, if the ball is hit to right field, who covers second, the second baseman or the shortstop? Kids see the ball hit to a player. Then they're asked which player covers a certain base. If they click on the correct player they hear, "Good Job!" If they click on the incorrect player they hear, "Try Again." Explanations are available by clicking.

4th inning - Backing Up The Play shows how each player backs up a hit or throw in a given situation. Most situations of hits, and throws between posistions are covered. Kids see the ball hit to a player. Then they're asked who backs up that player. If they click on the correct player or players they hear, "Good Job!" If they click on the incorrect player, they hear, "Try Again." Explanations show how players move to back up the play. Backing up throws is similar. Kids see a throw and are asked who backs up.

5th inning - Cutting Off The Play explains who is the cutoff player in a given situation, where he or she stands and where to throw the ball. Cutting off consists of three types of questions. Kids see a ball hit to a player in the outfield. They might be asked to identify the cutoff player, where the cutoff player should throw the ball, or to actually position the cutoff player. As in previous innings, kids get audible and visual feedback if they are correct or incorrect and can always get an explanation.

6th inning - Where's The Play?® is a review of all the concepts covered. The Beginner level reviews Inning 2 Where's The Best Out?, the Intermediate level reviews Innings 3 and 4, Covering The Bases and Backing Up The Play; and the Advanced level covers Innings 4 and 5, Backing Up The Play and Cutting Off The Play.

Where's the Play CDHere's what people are saying about Where's The Play?®

"An invaluable tool for all children interested in playing baseball."
- School Library Journal, November 2003.

"I just retired from pro baseball after 6 years in the Dodgers' minor league system. This is the best instructional video for a young kid. I am purchasing it for my 8 year old nephew. He is going to love it."
- Uncle

"This item will give you great insight about where kids on a baseball field should throw the ball on different situations. Little League coaches and parents will benefit also. My son loves going through it and the interactivity. Little Leagues should make this required stuff! (wish I thought of this)"
- Parent

Where's the Play screenshot"Having Where's The Play is like having a full-time coach living in the house."
- Parent

"I sensed my son's frustration when the ball was hit to him and he hesitated or held onto the ball before throwing it. We covered these things in practice, but it wasn't getting through. We spent the winter using your CD and talking about baseball. He couldn't wait until Spring. Since he started playing this year, I could see his enthusiasm and confidence grow each time out."
- Parent/Coach

"My son watches tapes and reads books about baseball, but he really took to your product because of the interactivity. The CD helped him be confident of where to throw the ball depending on the situation. Thanks for an excellent product."
- Parent

"Field practice time is scarce and precious. By the time you cover batting practice and infield/outfield there isn't much time to work on 'situations.' Your CD provides the opportunity for players at every age level to do 'their homework' on this most important aspect of the game in a fun way at their leisure. My grandsons love it. They said it's the best present I ever gave them."
- Grandparent/Coach

"I saw my daughter go from intimidated and uneasy in the field to a confident defensive team leader. Her whole outlook on the game has changed. Now she wants the ball hit to her!"
- Parent

"Nice for that rainy day when the team has to go inside. It gets the boys really thinking. It reinforces what I've been teaching for years."
- Coach

"The CD is a fun, engaging, interactive way to supplement the practice. As a mom who never played baseball or softball, it's a wonderful way to learn where the play is and engage in a learning activity with my son and 7-year old daughter who will soon be playing softball."
- Parent
